CITY OF EDMONTON

We were thrilled to have the City of Edmonton as the headline sponsor for the 2014 Pet Expo! They really kicked it up a notch this year, bringing together the participation of Animal Care & Control, Parks & Park Rangers, Wildlife Rehab, Capital City Clean-Up, The Valley Zoo, AND a City Enforcement Vehicle. We really got a taste of just how many areas the City of Edmonton is involved in with animals—both domestic and wild—and their services for pet care, licensing and ownership!

Animal Care & Control

Attendees had a chance to observe a piece of the animal handling training that is provided to City of Edmonton Animal Care & Control Officers with “Bite Training” presented by the City and E&E Kennels. The training demonstrated helps to minimize injury in the event of a dog attack while they are working in the community.

People also had a chance to check out an Animal Care and Control Vehicle, get information on lost pet recovery, adoptions, or sign up for animal licenses on the spot. Animal Care & Control Officers had a ton of great questions from visitors, and were able to provide on the spot answers for those who asked.

Parks Park Rangers?
Parks & Park Rangers

We brought a taste of the City’s grassy gems to the Expo by hosting the City of Edmonton’s Sanctuary “Park”. This simulated mini park area was complete with grass, picnic tables, and benches – just like you’d find in one of Edmonton’s many green spaces.

Edmonton’s River Valley has160km of maintained pathways and 20 major parks—the largest urban parkland in North America! There were Park Rangers on hand with handy Off-Leash Area maps, poop bag dispensers, and safety lights for collars.

Our guests had a chance to visit with a few of the unusual and exotic small critters who reside at the Valley Zoo. Thanks to the Zoo staff members who were on hand with hedgehogs, skinks, rabbits, and even an armadillo, we really had a fantastic range of animals and reptiles to interact with at this year’s Expo!

TRAINING TIPS

Belinda Wagner drew large crowds eager to learn in our Doggy Demo Area with her presentations this year! Belinda is a Behavioural Consultant, CGN evaluator, trainer and manager of the Edmonton Humane Society Canine Enrichment Centre.

With the help of her four-legged sidekicks, she put on two demonstrations: “The Truth about Training” and “Your Teenage Dog”. Using her own dogs and the assistance of handlers to help demonstrate her techniques, she discussed the science of how dogs learn, the importance of using positive reinforcement, and the benefits of training without fear or pain. Everyone learned a lot and benefited from Belinda’s wealth of canine knowledge!

CANADIAN SEARCH AND DISASTER DOGS
CANADIAN SEARCH AND DISASTER DOGS

We were really thrilled to have the dedicated crew from CASDDA demonstrating their dogs’ faithfulness to saving lives at this year’s Pet Expo!

CASDDA is an organization that trains and deploys dogs and volunteer handlers to search for individuals, alive or dead, whether lost in the wilderness, trapped in disaster areas or drowned in bodies of water. An educational and charitable association, they provide these services free of charge to communities. Recently some of their teams were deployed to the Philippines to help with the recovery efforts after the country was damaged by typhoon.

Using a mock disaster site compiled of pallets, boxes, ladders, tree branches and “rubble”, some of our younger attendees got to join in the action by volunteering to play missing persons. The dogs with the CASDDA (including Belgian Malanois’, Dalmations, and All-Canadians) eagerly got to work showing the crowd their search and sniff skills!

Dr. Kim Romanufa from Hermitage Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Ted Purcell from Hermitage Veterinary Hospital trainer Belinda Wagner from Edmonton Humane Society, Angela Ewing-Hicks from Glenora Cat Clinic, and Dr. Mohamed Latif from VetEmerg all partook in answering questions from our attendees on all sorts of topics related to animal care, health, behavior and safety. We were pleased that the Pet Expo could once again facilitate a panel where the public has easy access to knowledge from local experts!

BARK ‘N MAD DOGSPORTS- FLYBALL & DISC DEMOS

Bark'n Mad Dogsport Club put on some great crowd pleasing shows at the Expo this year!

Flyball Flyball

You knew when they were taking over the doggie demo area due to the increased noise level in the Show hall! Their flyball races and disc dog demos drew huge crowds and lots of cheering spectators.

The kids vs. dogs relay races were always a huge crowd pleaser as the two-leggeds ran their hearts out against Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels and Shelties! Alas, it’s a dog’s sport after all—the four–leggeds prevailed!! We are looking forward to a rematch in 2015!

SCENT & SEEK- DOGSPAW SPORT DETECTION TEAM

We were excited to introduce our crowd to the world of Sport Detection and scent discrimination training! Using the same techniques as the pros to train detection dogs to alert for narcotics, bed bugs or explosives, Sport Detection features dog and handler teams racing against the clock and each other to locate hidden target odor swabs.

Roseanna Gullekson BFA, CPDT-KA, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and multi-titled Tracking Dog Competitor, showed the DOGSPAW Detection Sport Teams in action!

CHARITY OF CHOICE
$3500 RAISED FOR ACTSS: CHARITY OF CHOICE

We were extremely pleased with the great success that our Charity of Choice, Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society, had with their 50/50 draw fundraising efforts at the Pet Expo! We were even more pleased with the special Pet Expo magic that resulted. Tracey, the winner of the 50/50 draw (and who happened to be recently subsidized for her dog Sadie) chose to donate her $531 win right back to the ACTSS, resulting in the Society raising $1,063.00 from the 50/50 raffle alone!

The Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society also raised over $2400 through their silent auction and calendar sales, bringing the total raised to almost $3500!! Thank you everyone for your generosity in assisting the ACTSS to help local animals in need!

FUNDRAISED FOR OUR RESCUES
$3,257.00 FUNDRAISED FOR OUR RESCUES!!

We were SO thrilled at the money we raised at the show for our rescue organizations!

Thank-you to Save-On Foods, Sobeys, AB Chrysler Dealers, Pet Valu & Greenhawk Equestrian Supplies for your donations of re-usable shopping bags for show swag! Our dedicated volunteers asked attendees for a monetary donation of their choice for the re-usable bags at the entrance. Now, we know how hard it can be to straight up ask people for money—even if it is for a great cause!! We are happy to say that we raised $3,257.00 for our efforts which were pooled and then split among our participating rescue groups. Great work, volunteers!

The rescues work tirelessly for the benefit of local animals, and this all comes at a cost! We’re very happy to make a contribution to food, leashes, vet expenses, training, shelter—just a few of the costs incurred when undertaking animal rescue work. To all our rescue organizations—we salute you! Thank you for all of the hard work you do on behalf of our animals, and we were thrilled to have you at the show!
